Read on to know more about St Weonards.
The village of St Weonards lies in an area that was known as Archenfield during the Saxon times. Archenfield was also previously the kingdom of Ergyng which adjoined the modern border with Wales. In later times, Ergying was reduced to a semi-autonomous cantref (a medieval Welsh land division) but still retained Welsh language and customs until the early 19th century.
There are some nice attractions located within St Weonards. Here's a few of them:
· St Weonards Church. St Weonard may have been a local Celtic saint and this church is dedicated to him. The old stained glass in the church – although now destroyed – referred to him as a hermit. A charter of 1155 contains the first mention of the church and it has features that date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The current church is from the 16th century with modifications made in later centuries.
· St Weonards Tump. This is located south of the churchyard. It is a large mound or “tump” that is about 45 yards in diameter at the base and is around 14 feet high. Traditionally, this was the burial place of St Weonard, but excavations in 1855 showed that there were two cremation burials in that dated back to the Bronze Age in the mound. The Normans may be used the tump as a motte for a small wooden castle and it was also used as the site of morris dancing and other village festivities.
· Treago Castle. This fortified manor house is located about 0.3 miles west of the village. Today, it's a Grade I listed structure that was believed to date back to 1480 and was built by Sir Richard Mynors, the Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1500. The castle is situated in private parkland and is still owned by the Mynors family.
