Baldock is a market town in Hertfordshire just 53 miles north of London. It dates from the 12th century and there is a debate about the origin of its name. Some historians think that the name was derived from a dead tree --– a bald oak --– while others think its name may have been derived from an old French name for Baghdad in Iraq.
