The village of Brae started as a tiny Scottish fishing village. Rapid growth was experienced in the 1970s when the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal was constructed nearby. In addition, since Shetland is closer to the North Pole than any other part of the British Isles, it also makes a wonderful destination to see Northern Lights or aurora borealis. Locally, it is known as 'merrie dancers.'
