HISTORY

Kinlochbervie was traditionally a crofting community. It was only until the 19th century when the village experienced a growth due to the arrival of fellow crofters from other areas in Sutherland. However, a famine occurred in the late 1840s due to an outbreak of potato blight. This led many to leave for the “new world” and thus cause the population and local economy to decline and this was the case until the Second World War.

The late 1940s saw the village capitalise on the North Sea being fished out. As such, they became a fishing port and the 1980s marked a good time for the harbour. The port lands white fish and shellfish and even imports fish from the Faroe Islands.
