Flower Delivery to North Kessock with Clare Florist
North Kessock is a village located in the Highland council area of Scotland. It’s found on the Black Isle, to the north of the city of Inverness. It’s located in the western portion of Scotland. During the 2011 census, there were 931 people living in the village.
In Gaelic residents call North Kessock: “Ceasag a Tuath” or “Aiseag Cheasaig”.
In the past, one had to get into North Kessock by taking a ferry across the water. This brought a lot of commerce to the village. But today, it remains as a quiet village, as most commuters no longer take that route. They bypass the village by taking the A9, which is the main road to the north. There is also a South Kessock, which is a district of Inverness.
The Kessock Bridge is a modern bridge built in 1982, and is in cable-stay style. It crosses the Beauly Firth, which is small inlet that joins the Moray Firth. This inlet falls between North Kessock and Inverness. The Beauly Firth is used by the shipping industry, so the bridge is raised high above sea level. In the evening the bridge is lit up for residents of North Kessock to see from a far distance.
It’s believed that settlers first arrived in North Kessock around 1437. The Dominican monastery in Inverness was given a special charter for a ferry to run from Inverness to the Black Isle. Apparently it was a popular pilgrim route for residents to visit St. Duthac Church in Tain, which is in the County of Ross. Many residents of North Kessock liked to visit a clootie well in Easter Ross. This is where strips of cloth were left behind on the branches of a tree, as part of a healing ritual.
The Kessock Ferry ran until 1982 for the residents of North Kessock and South Kessock. It was no longer needed after Kessock Bridge was completed.
Visitors enjoy visiting North Kessock to see the dolphins. There are many families of bottlenose dolphins who call Moray Firth their home. These bottlenose dolphins have the distinction of living more northerly than any other family of bottlenose dolphins in the world today.
Once a dolphin watching boat tour has been completed, tourists can head to The Dolphin and Seal Centre, which is found to the north of North Kessock, and along the A9 road. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society runs the Centre.
To learn more of the region, there is the Tourist Information Centre also nearby.
Residents of the region have Spey Bay nearby, which has a Wildlife Centre, a long distance footpath, and a golf course.
