Margate is a seaside resort on the eastern coast of Kent in southern England, just 38 miles northeast of Maidstone. It was founded as a seaport and in the 15th century joined the confederation of the Cinque Ports. These included Hastings, New Romney, Sandwich, Dover and Hythe and were a trading and military alliance along the shores of the English Channel. Today, the organization is largely ceremonial. The town's development as a seaside resort started in the late 18th century when it became a favoured holiday spot for Londoners.

Margate's sandy beaches still attract crowds of holidaymakers, especially Walpole Bay and Westbrook Bay, though nowadays they are more likely to be day trippers. There are facilities for jet skiing and water skiing as well as adventure golf. Old paddle steamers sail from the piers during the summer months adding a touch of nostalgia.

The refurbished Edwardian Winter Gardens in Margate have become the Thanet region's largest arts and conference centre with five theatres, an art gallery and leisure centres with swimming pools. The Theatre Royal here is England's oldest theatre and was used continuously from 1787 to 1963, with a brief period in the 1840s as a chapel and later as a cinema between the two world wars. The Tom Thumb Theatre is Britain's smallest theatre. Once a Victorian coaching house, it was transformed into a theatre in 1984. Its interior design is an eclectic mixture of traditional Alpine and Japanese architecture.

The English painter Joseph Mallard William Turner thought that the skies around Margate and Thanet were the most beautiful in Europe. He drew St. John's Church in Margate when he was about 11 or 12 years old. The Turner Contemporary Gallery in the Winter Gardens is named after him.
