Flower Delivery to Sissinghurst with Clare Florist
Sissinghurst is a village with a long and vibrant history in the county of Kent, England, near Cranbrook. The town was originally named Mylkehouse, but in 1851, the residents petitioned to change the name because of negative associations with gangs of the same name from surrounding areas.
Perhaps the most famous attraction in Sissinghurst is the castle of the same name. While not a traditional medieval English castle with a fortification or moat, Sissinghurst was built in the 16th century by Sir Richard Baker. The castle served as an English military prison for the French during the Seven Years War from 1756 to 1763. After this period, it also was used as a workhouse for the poor and barracks for local farm workers in the 1870s. After falling into a period of disrepair, the property and surrounding 450-acres were purchased in 1930 by English writers Vita Sackville-West (1892-1962) and her husband, Harold Nicolson (1886-1968).
Sackville- West and Nicolson are responsible for the grand castle that visitors find in Sissinghurst today. West was a poet and wrote a weekly column in The Observer newspaper about gardens and the natural world. During the 1950s, the husband and wife team transformed the grounds into beautiful gardens and renovated the castle. Nicolson worked on the plans and layout of the garden, while Sackville- West made decisions on plantings and garden themes. Sissinghurst Castle Garden opened to the public in 1938.
What makes the gardens at Sissinghurst Castle so wonderful is the magnificent design of the landscape, transformed so that each garden feels like its own outside room. Each space is defined by a different theme or motif, with each garden separated by hedges, doors, and brick walls. Its design and concepts were truly innovative during the 1930s and inspired many other well-known English gardens in the 20th century. The National Trust has been the steward of the property since 1967. In addition to the famous gardens, the public can visit the grounds of the Castle, including a working farm and tower to climb during three seasons of the year.
The village of Sissinghurst embraces its lifestyle of a country village with amazing gardens by putting on two large flower shows a year- one in June for summer plants and flowers, and another in September for autumn plantings. When you need flowers at other times of year, you can send flowers to Sissinghurst through online florist Clare Florist.
