Flower Delivery to Southborough with Clare Florist
A town and civil parish located in the District of Tunbridge Wells, Southborough, Kent can be found just to the north of Tunbridge Wells and offers the A26 London road which passes through the village itself. The population is just over 11,000 and is located in what is known as the High Weald Area of Outstanding Beauty thanks to its remarkable location in the southeast corner of England. The name itself comes from the fact that it is the southernmost of four boroughs that surround the Tonbridge Castle.
The history of the area in terms of human settlement goes back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. In 315 BC, the Castle Hill Iron Age Fort was founded in the area located in what is now known as the Eastern Valley. There are numerous routes that link the fort to the surrounding area, including what is now Southborough. However, there is very little information about this region of the UK until after the Norman Conquest.
As thanks for his assistance during the Norman Conquest, Richard Fitz Gilbert was rewarded with the land that would include Southborough. He constructed a manor and a castle which was used to rule the area. Over the centuries, the land changed hands several times as it was bestowed to various people under the crown of Henry VIII and then Elizabeth I. The manor was finally split up and sold in 1790 when the Lady Smythe passed away. The result was that several people now owned the land that once surrounded the castle.
Until the middle of the 16th century, the entire area was a part of the Royal Forest of Southfrith and used mostly for hunting purposes. The settlements were more isolated hamlets occupied by gypsies and other nomadic people. The area however was known for its rich supply of Iron that had been mined since prehistoric times. Gunpowder was also manufactured until World War II and the town has since been known for its heavy industry, textiles, agriculture, and transport.
By the late 19th century, Southborough began expanding rapidly and grew to the town that it is today. There are many things that tourists can do while in the village of Southborough, including shopping, sightseeing, and visiting the general area that is well known for its natural beauty. For many, Southborough is a natural stop along the way to the coast and enjoys a stellar reputation for its combination of beauty and modern conveniences.
