Flower Delivery to Toys Hill with Clare Florist
Toys Hill is located in the county of Kent, on the southeastern region of England. It falls within the Brasted civil parish, in the Sevenoaks district. It’s located on a steeply sloped cliff called Greensand Ridge. This escarpment is made of mainly sandstone as a base. The cliff is covered in a wooded forest that runs east to west. The summit is also called Toys Hill, and is 235 metres above sea level.
There was a terrible storm in 1987 that damaged much of the woodlands. Toys Hill lost most of its ancient beech pollards. Since then, the woods have grown over again with new beech and birch trees, and sessile oak. Natural England has been studying Scords Woods, in an effort to learn about natural regrowth, without human intervention, after bad storms.
It’s believed that there used be a family who lived in the region, that were called Toys, hence the name. They were believed to be landowners during the Middle Ages. In the year 1295, one of the family, Robert Toys, paid cash to the Manor of Otford, so he could keep his pigs in Otford Woods. This is likely how the name Toys Hill came about.
Toy’s Hill was considered a part of the Common of Brasted Chart, and residents raised income with cattle, pigs, peat gathering, firewood gathering, and quarrying Chertstone to build roads and buildings. Chertstone is a hard stone that was used for centuries in the building of roads, and structures. Throughout Toys Hill are many pits where Cherststone was dug from.
Residents of Toys Hill can enjoy spectacular views of their surroundings. The Weald of Kent can be viewed from Puddledock Lane. Also on Puddledock Lane is an old sunken well, and a short bench to sit upon. The terrace was donated in 1898 by Octavia Hill, who was one of the founders of the National Trust, who protects ancient buildings, land, and structures. Puddledock Lane was one of the National Trust’s first properties.
There are many more properties at Toys Hill that now belong to the National Trust. These are acquired through donations. One of the most notable were the large woodlands in 1981. This area is now called the Octavia Hill Woodland. It is called a “Site of Special Scientific Interest”. Its grounds contain abundant wildlife, that are protected through conservation efforts. In Toys Hill alone, the National Trust owns over two hundred acres of woodland. Horseback riding and cycling over these properties are popular activities with tourists and residents alike.
