Flower Delivery to Wingham by Clare Florist
Wingham is an attractive village located in Kent, England. It is a civil parish that is situated along the ancient coastal road (which is now A257), from Richborough to London. It is also quite close to Canterbury, which is a historic English cathedral city in Kent.
The town of Wingham has existed since the Stone Age, but it was during the Roman times when it was established as a village. In the Domesday book, which is a manuscript containing records of a survey of a major part of England and Wales in 1086, Wingham was described as being a manor which is in the possession of the Archbishop of Canterbury during the Saxon times.
In 1286, Archbishop Peckham founded a college in the town. Other buildings that still stand today were also constructed during this time, including The Dog Inn – which is a Grade II listed historic building – and The Eight Bells.
The town of Wingham is now home to light industry, but it mostly serves as a dormitory town for Sandwich and Canterbury. One of the recent events the town has seen was the development of Miller Close, which involved the construction of small houses around the nearby The Rural Housing Trust. It was formally opened by Princess Margaret. There are lots of structures in Wingham that have roots dating back to the 13th century. Some of which exist to this day but with a new purpose like inns. Some of the oldest structures in the town include the Bleak Cottage, Oxenden House and Tudor House
Wingham Wildlife Park is the place to go to when you want to see the only penguins in Kent. Not only that, the park is also home to the largest number of crocodiles in Kent. In addition to that, this is the only place in Europe where you can see little red flying foxes. Apart from the aforementioned animals, the park also houses more than 200 species that include a variety of reptiles and birds. St Mary's Church is a historic church whose highlights are 14th century misericords that feature several designs and an Oxenden monument built in 1782 in honor of the Oxenden family.
The Anchor on High Street is a traditional country pub that serves a unique combination of fine ales and homemade food and also has a vibrant live music scene. The Dog Inn offers both accommodation as well as a restaurant/pub. It is a Grade II listed inn that perfectly blends 13th century features with modern comforts. The restaurant serves traditional homemade meals using local produce. The Red Lion Inn in Canterbury Road is another 13th century inn with a bar. They have a large selection of wines and real ales. The food is freshly prepared and cooked to order.
You can start off by booking a stay at a Grade II listed property, the Old Butchers Bed and Breakfast . Nothing spells romance like accommodation situated in an ancient village.
