Flower Delivery to Wye by Clare Florist
Historic Wye, Kent is located just minutes from Canterbury, while being the central village for Wye with Hinxhill parish. In 2013, the village was voted 3rd place by the annual Sunday Times survey of best places in the UK to live. The town has a valued floral past, and flower gardens about in this small village of just over 2000 residents. Wye flowers have a reputation for attracting tourists throughout the season, and a pleasant day spent among the offerings is highly encouraged.
As a way station just beyond Canterbury, Wye was established as a Roman camp and villa during the years of occupation. The River Great Sour flows past, and Wye became the central ford for troops and communication throughout the region. The remains of the camp and villa have been discovered, and are surrounded by lovely wild flower walks for a pleasant day trip of exploration.
A marketplace was established in medieval times, selling produce, floral, and dry goods through the area. In the 18th century, a new turnpike increased traffic to the area, just as the A28 road does today. The Wye railway station went the line between Ashford and Margate, making it simple to travel to without having to park the car.
At one time, the Wye racecourse was located here, but was closed permanently in 1975 to a lack orf the owner’s ability to improve the conditions of the track. Critics of the course marked it as being better suited for dig racing than horses, and it was shuttered.
The Wye College of the Imperial College of London is located here, better known as Wye College. Founded in 1447 as a Latin school and seminary, it became part of the London College in 1900, where it transitioned into an agricultural school. Controversy has surrounded the school since 2005 concerning encroachment with large scale development, as the local organization Wye Future Group attempted to reduce the land footprint in order to preserve the area’s natural beauty and resources.
Every month on the first and third Saturday, Wye hosts a wonderfully accessible farmer’s market selling local products and flowers. Also, Wye hosts an annual summer festival featuring blues music and real ale in the grounds of Withersdane, Wye, with all profits going to charity.
Wye is also the crossroads of several national walks, including the Pilgrims Way, and North Downs Way. Enjoy a bit of scenery and lovely floral gardens with a trip to Wye, Kent soon.
