Blacko is a small village located within the Pendle district and county of Lancashire, England. It’s also a civil parish, and is on the upper western portion of the country. Only 672 people were recorded as living here as of the 2011 UK census, up from 595 people in the 2001 census. To reach the village one must drive on the A682 from Nelson to Gisburn.

It also used to be part of the Barrowford township in the Whalley parish which became a civil parish in 1866. Blacko village was created from the remainder of the district. The village used to be on the border of West Riding of Yorkshire but it was reorganized in 1974. The parish is combined with Barrowford, Blacko, and Higherford wards to form the Pendle Borough Council.

There are some lovely views to be seen in the village. Boulswoth Hill can be seen from the southeast. Nelson used to be a cotton town and it can be seen to the south, and Pendle HIll can be seen towards the west in the valley of Pendle Water. Many parts of the village are situated within an AONB—Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is the Forest of Bowland. This includes parts of the parish along the western side.

Blacko Tower can also been seen at the top of a hill. This tower is also known as Stansfield Tower. This is a tall circular tower that can be seen for miles away. This tower was built around 1890. A local grocer named Jonathan Stansfield lived in the area and built this circular tower from stone. The goal was to have a view rather than for any fortification purposes. The view shows the Ribblesdale portion of the Yorkshire Dales from the very top. Apparently Stansfield wasn’t happy with the final height of the tower.

In 1952, an axe from the Bronze Age was found near the tower. It’s believed the axe is over 3500 years old.

Blacko has the distinction of winning the Best Kept Village award in 2002 and 2007. It’s also won the Champion Village category for the years of 2011, 2013, and 2014.

Jimmy Clitheroe lived from 1921 to 1973, and was a comedian made popular for his appearance on a BBC radio series called The Clitheroe Kid. He lived in Blacko from 1922 to 1935. He went to school there and also made his start in entertainment at amateur concert party shows at the village’s Methodist chapel. He became a professional comedian in 1936.

Another comedian named Tommy Trafford also lived in Blacko. He did many summer seasons of shows at the Lancashire seaside resort of Southport.
