The village’s history dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period. Edgworth’s village name is seen in various historical documents with differing spellings: Eggwrthe (1212), Egewurth (1221), Eggeswrth (1277), Eddgeword/Eggeworth (1292). By the 19th century, the village was known as Edgeworth, but the official spelling is now Edgworth, though often seen with the additional ‘e’ as well. The name comes from Anglo-Saxon and means ‘a village in the hills.’
As a rural village, Edgworth’s history is based in its agricultural beginnings. In the 17th century, there are many records indicating the number of ‘folds’ in the village, meaning an enclosed farm and associated cottages. There were many throughout the village’s history, including Horrocks Fold, Isherwood Fold, Thomasson Fold, and Brandwood Fold. There was a brief period in the 19th century when Edgworth was home to several textile mills on the outer limits of the village.
In Edgworth, historic structures include the Edgworth Methodist Church, built in the 1860s and the Edgworth Home, the first National Children’s Home in England, which opened in 1872. The building still stands but was closed in 2002. Both the church and children’s home were built by the village’s patron, James Barlow, one of the owners of the textile mills in the village, Barlow & Jones, Ltd.
The Barlow Institute, a recreational centre with park, lake, cricket, and bowling fields, was built by the Barlow family in 1909 as a memorial to the family.
