Flower Delivery to Great Mitton with Clare Florist

Great Mitton is a civil parish and village located in Ribble Valley, Lancashire, England. The civil parish is divided away from another civil parish, Little Mitton, by the River Ribble. Both parishes reside about three miles from the town of Clitheroe. Together, Great Mitton and Little Mitton cover well under 2,000 acres belonging to the Forest of Bowland. This makes both parishes a part of the smallest known township in the Forest of Bowland.

A Brief History

Ancient Mitton derived its name from Old English, when it was a settlement at the mythe confluence of the Ribble and Hodder Rivers.

The historical Great Mitton parish held several townships, which included Aighton, Old Laund Booth, Bailey and Chaigley in Blackburnshire. It also held the chapelries of Waddington and Grindleton. The townships of West Bradford in Staincliffe and Bashall Eaves also resided within historical Great Mitton.

In historical Great Mitton and Little Mitton, the Domesday manor straddled large swathes of land on both sides of the River Ribble. Eventually, the manor gained the Lordship of Bowland, whose Lords of Bowland held influence over much of the Royal Forest and a bevy of ten manors that spanned eight other townships and four parishes.

Great Mitton has historical roots as a part of West Riding of Yorkshire; it was eventually transferred to Lancashire for administrative purposes in April 1972.

All Hallows Church, also known as the Church of St. Michael, was originally built during the 13th century. During the 15th and 16th century, additions were built onto the church. All Hallows Church has been appointed a Grade I listed building by the English Heritage.

Landmarks

Great Mitton hosts an ancient church, the All Hallows Church. It also hosts an ancient manor house and pub, known as The Three Fishes. Another pub, known as The Aspinall Arms, resides across from the Ribble in Little Mitton.
