Flower Delivery to Huncoat with Clare Florist
Located in the Northwest section of Lancashire, Huncoat is a small, humble community of roughly 4,400 citizens that live just to the east of Accrington. A ward of Hyndburn, Huncoat is very representative of this part of Lancashire in terms of its history, people, and attractions that bring in tourists the year round. You can find the Huncoat railway station on the East Lancashire Line where people travel on a daily basis.
The name of the town comes from the Anglo-Saxon in which “Hun” is a family name while “Cotte” comes from the Old English which means a shelter or place for animals.
The History of Huncoat
Although it is certain that ancient nomadic peoples have gone through the area for thousands of years, the first evidence comes from the Roman occupation of England starting around 2,000 years ago which included the area around Huncoat. After the Romans left, the area was left under Brigantes control and then as part of the larger Anglo-Saxon kingdom for the next few centuries until the arrival of William the Conqueror.
Lancashire itself was officially established by 1182 and many of the smaller towns in the region like Huncoat began forming as well. At the beginning, Huncoat was actually a township that was part of Whalley. It was mentioned in the Domesday survey as King Edward held two carucates of land in the location of Huncoat.
It was not until 1866 that it became a civil parish. By 1894, it formed part of the Burnley Rural District which lasted until 1929 when it was abolished and became part of the Municipal Borough of Accrington. By 1974, Huncoat became an unpairshed section of the Hyndburn borough.
Although a relatively small community, Huncoat has turned out at least three people who have obtained national recognition which include mathematician Harold Davenport, child soprano Hollie Steel, and the highly versatile actress, fashion designer, singer and songwriter Diana Vickers.
Today, the community of Huncoat is a thriving town that is typical of the eastern Lancashire region, filled with historic treasures and friendly people. For those who are travelling through the region, Huncoat makes for a nice stopover thanks to the restaurants and shopping areas. Plus, the scenery particularly in the late spring and summer is simply beautiful. In addition, the early autumn is another time to visit this remarkable area thanks to its natural beauty.
