History

There are two versions as to how Rawtenstall got its name. The first is a combination of the Middle English routen (to roar or bellow) and the Old English stall (pool in a river). The second is more recent and it relates to the identification of the town as a cattle farm in 1324.

The earliest settlement in town was probably established in the early medieval period. It was during this time that the Rawtenstall formed part of the Forest of Rossendale. The 15th and 16th centuries saw more substantial buildings constructed, along with corn and flour mills.

The Industrial Revolution saw Rawtenstall experience a major period of growth through the construction of mills to process cotton. The town's close location to the developing mercantile and industrial centre in Manchester also contributed to its growth.

The decline of manufacturing industries led to Rawtenstall's decline in population.
