History

Hoton was described in 1870 as “A township and chapelry in Prestwold parish, Leicester; near the river Soar and the boundary with Notts, 3¼ miles NE of Loughborough railway station.”

The land was owned by Robert De Jort and Earl Hugh after the Norman conquest in 1300. During that time, the village was sparsely populated but this increased in 1666 when a hearth tax list showed about 19 residents.

The village of Hoton once consisted of three 400-acre patches of agricultural land. The 1760 Enclosure Act saw more small fields being established and also saw the changing of agricultural patterns.

The area saw development when Charles James Packe II purchased the Horton Manor house. This saw the construction of an ale house, an inn and two boarding schools for girls, along with farm buildings and cottages.

Hoton saw lots of changes during the 1800s which really improved the parish. Able-bodied men carried out the maintenance of roads and facilities as well as the care for the poor. Although sanitation was improved, the area still suffered from cases of diphtheria, ringworm and typhoid.

The Packe Arms – this is a country pub and restaurant located in the heart of Hoton. It was once called The Marquis of Granby and was restored in the 1800s by Charles James Packe which prompted a change in name as well. The Good Pub says that the place is “worth a visit.”

Church of Saint Leonard – located on Wymeswold Road, this church is now a private residence. The church started to decline after the Second World War and attempts were made to better it but to no avail. The contents of the church were given to other churches with the organ in particular being given to Wartnaby and its pews to Branston.
