The village of Worthington is found in the northwest reaches of Leicestershire, close to the region's main towns of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Coalville and just five miles from East Midlands Airport. The wider parish of Worthington also encompasses the small hamlets of Newbold and Gelsmoor and is accessible from the M1 motorway, where Junction 23a meets the A42 road.

First recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Werditone', Worthington began life as a rural settlement before seeing rapid expansion during the 20th Century due to the growth of mining in the area. With a modern day population of over 1000 inhabitants, it now boasts a primary school, pub and post office to cater to its residents, with supermarket purchases and Worthington flower delivery available from further afield.

The picturesque village offers a number of highlights, in particular Worthington Round House. Widely believed to have been constructed in the 18th Century, the octagonal brick building originally served as the parish lock-up within which people were detained prior to their showing before the local magistrate. Today, the Round House is a 'scheduled monument', protected and esteemed for its archaeological importance and historical interest.

The other monument of note in the village is the Norman era parish Church of Saint Matthew, today a part of the United Benefice of Breedon and Worthington. Built on Saxon foundations, its 13th Century building is a simple stone structure boasting an array of distinct features that hark back to its rich and varied past. The village's other church, the Worthington Methodist Chapel, was built in 1820.

Worthington's former railway line now forms part of National Cycle Route 6 that runs from London to the Lake District. Locally, this section of bike path is known as the Cloud Trail and is clearly signposted with white and blue markers.
