History

In John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, Hainton is described as “a parish in Louth district, Lincoln; on the Wolds, 5 miles NE of Wragby and 7 SE by E of Market Rasen r. station.” The entry from the 1870-72 work also states that the village has a post office under Wragby and that the manor, along with the land belonged to the Heneages who have owned them since Henry III's time. The Imperial Gazetteer entry goes on to describe the parish as a “meet for the South Wold hounds.”

Attractions

History is one of the main reasons to visit Hainton, and there are a couple of interesting structures that time has left behind. Here's a few of them:

·    St Mary's Church – dates back to the 11th century and it is said that Capability Brown may have been involved in its remodelling in 1763. Edward James Wilson restored the church in 1848 and he retained much of the Norman lower stages as well as the tower and Early English nave arcades. Today, the church is a Grade I listed building.

·    Hainton Hall – this continues to be the seat of the Heneage family who have occupied the property since the time of Henry III. The hall is set in a park measuring 145 acres and was landscaped by Capability Brown around 1763.

·    St Francis De Sales Chapel – located on the estate grounds of Hainton Hall. The chapel is a Grade II listed building.
