The city of Liverpool is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and birthplace of the Beatles; the ward of Old Swan is located at its heart, with a population of just over 12,000 it is named after a pub. The Inn was called the Three Swans and worked the pack horse route in the 18th Century. The Three Swans could be found on the corner of Petticoat Lane and Prescott Road; it has now been replaced by another pub called the Red House.

At the centre of Old Swan is a road junction between Prescott Road, Saint Oswald Street, Derby Lane and Broadgreen Road (formally Petticoat Lane). At one end of the ward is Saint Oswald's Church and at the other the striking Saint Paul's Church.

Being in the centre of Liverpool, Old Swan is well placed for accessing all the attractions Liverpool has to offer. For rainy days the Tate Liverpool and World Museum are world class. Millions of visitors flock to Liverpool to follow in the footsteps of the Beatles and they are not disappointed with the Cavern Club and the 'Beatles Story' visitor attractions. For those who prefer to spend time with nature there is the Sefton Coastal Path and the Hilbre Islands. The Islands are three tidal islands at the mouth of the River Dee which are managed as nature reserves and are an ideal location for seal and bird watching.

Sefton Park is a wonderful location on a sunny day and is home to the Sefton Park Palm House, a Victorian glasshouse which contains numerous tropical plants. Nearer to Old Swan itself is the Wavertree Botanic Gardens, a 19th century park which incorporates a walled botanic garden and grade II curator's lodge.
