Flower Delivery to Aintree with Clare Florist
Located just outside Liverpool, Aintree is a fairly small Merseyside village of just under 7,000 people. For hundreds of years, Aintree was barely on the map and consisted of little more than several scattered settlements. Since the 19th century, however, this village has been associated much more closely with horses and horseracing in particular. Known primarily as the site of the Aintree Racecourse, Aintree is in many ways a racing town.
History of Aintree
The earliest recorded mentions of Aintree date to the early 12th century. Until the past century, Aintree was sparsely populated, with fewer than 300 people living there at the beginning of the 20th century. This small population is perhaps surprising given Aintree’s proximity to Liverpool. The local landscape, however, is mostly fields and bogs, making it difficult for agricultural settlements to take hold. Horseracing has been a part of the local culture since the 19th century, and in the mid-20th century, the Aintree Racecourse housed a Grand Prix motorcar racing track, as well. Today, motorsport events still take place on the site.
Local Landmarks and Events
In addition to the Racecourse, there are several other noteworthy landmarks in or near Aintree. Despite the village’s relatively small size, it is home to no fewer than five churches. Outdoor activities are also popular in the region, with a local golf centre that includes a driving range. There is also a nearby children’s centre, Play Away, that provides games, food, and entertainment for children. Of course, given that Aintree is located so close to Liverpool, the village also has access to everything on offer in Liverpool, as well.
The biggest Aintree event each year is of course the Grand National, a horserace that features distinctive jumping of 30 fences in two laps. The race is popular with racing enthusiasts, gamblers, and visitors from across the country. Typically held in the spring, the Grand National is an incredibly famous and storied tradition, and the local residents in particular take it very seriously. The festival surrounding the Grand National is typically a three-day affair that features fashion, entertainment, and revelry.
