Newton-le-Willows, a village in the county of Merseyside, is located in northwest England. It was once known as Newton-in-Makerfield and sits between the cities of Liverpool and Manchester.

The village name of Newton-le-Willows is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Its name means “new town” and its original name of Newton-in-Makerfield was added in the 12th century to distinguish the village from other Newtons in other counties. Its name changed to its current form in 1939.

Newton-le-Willows has been an agricultural village and market town for most of its history. There are ancient remains of a Roman road close to the village and it is believed that a Roman fort or camp may have been within the village boundaries at one time. This led to the development of Vulcan Village and Earlestown, residential areas for railroad and foundry workers, making Newton-le-Willows known as a railway town. Coal mining also helped to develop the town as the South Lancashire Coalfield and Parkside Colliery was located just outside Newton-le-Willows.

Newton-le-Willows is located on the western end of Chat Moss, a large peat bog area that is agricultural land and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.
