Flower Delivery to Rainhill by Clare Florist
Rainhill is a large village and civilian parish located within the Metropolitan Borough of St. Helens in Merseyside, England. Historically, it was part of Lancashire and it was also formerly a part of a township within the ecclesiastical parish of Prescot. After the Local Government Act of 1894, it became a part of the Whiston Rural District.
The town is mostly known for being the site of the celebrated Rainhill Locomotive Trials, which was won by Stephenson's Rocket. This particular event paved the way for what became the railway revolution that spread across the entire world. In fact, the pioneering Liverpool-Manchester railway still runs in Rainhill.
The name of Rainhill is said to come from the Old English personal name of Regna or Regan. Records show that the town was part of the townships within the “Widness fee.” When Roger of Rainhill dies in 1246, the township was divided equally among his daughters. One half was centred around Rainhill Manor Public House and the other centred on Rainhill Hall.
Parks, Historical Places, and Open Spaces
Loyola Hall – This was once called Rainhill House when it was owned by Bartholomew, one of the four brothers who came from Stonyhurst and made a living in town. It now functions as a retreat run by the Society of Jesus and is also a fantastic place to view flowers in Rainhill.
Another feature of the village is the George Stephenson Skew Bridge. It is a skew arch bridge made of sandstone and carries the main road over the railway. It credits its name to the unusual diagonal with which the railway passes under the bridge.
Rainhill is primarily a commuter village for workers in Liverpool, as well as St Helens and Widnes. Housing in town is a mixture of different kinds of dwellings. There are modern houses, inter-war homes, and Victorian dwellings – just to name a few.
There are several medical centres in town, the most notable being the Scott Clinic where Michael Abram was treated after he was convicted of stabbing George Harrison of the Beatles.
If you want a bit of history to go with the modern times, take time to head over to Rainhill and be amazed with its charms. Relax, rejuvenate and enjoy!
