HISTORY

The earliest known record of Forres was on a map drawn by Ptolemy thousands of years ago. In it, the town was labelled as Varis. More recently, it is known as the location of some of the action that took place in Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Forres was home to a castle a thousand years ago. It was located in the west end of High Street. The castle was further strengthened in the 1100s to become a royal residence. Today, none of the castle exists and the site where it stood is now a public park.

On 23 June 1496, King James IV of Scotland granted a Royal Charter. In it were laid the rights and privileges that the townspeople of Forres can enjoy.

Today, Forres still bears evidence of being a principle market town back in the day. Its early wealth is evidenced b the many attractive buildings found in the town centre including the 1828 toolboth and the mercat cross from 1844.
