Flower Delivery to Aylsham with Clare Florist
Aylsham is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Elesham” and “Ailesham.” It is believed the town’s name comes from the Anglo-Saxon language and likely was founded by an Anglo-Saxon named Aegel, who named the town “Aegel’s Ham,” meaning “Aegel’s settlement.” Found archaeological evidence shows prehistoric settlement in the area. The village is located just over two miles from a large Roman settlement in Brampton and connects via a known Roman roadway. There is significant evidence of industrial development from that time in Aylsham, including the discovery of kilns, suggesting the village was part of the Roman pottery manufacture.
Aylsham has long been a busy village centre. Until the 15th century, the line and worsted industry played a major role in the area. Aylsham Webb, the cloth of the village, was one of the official cloths of both Edward II and III. The town’s role in the cloth industry made it an ideal place for a weekly market, which was established by Henry VIII in 1519. In addition to the weekly market that supported the cloth and agricultural industry, the village became known for is cattle fairs which were held two times a year.
Close to Aylsham are many large country estates and grand houses, many of which are now popular tourist attractions. These include Blickling Hall, Felbrigg, Mannington, and Wolterton. These homes are protected historic estates and the first two estates are National Trust properties. Blickling Hall offers magnificent gardens, woodlands, and farms within the estate. The Black Boys Inn in the Marketplace is the oldest surviving building in Aylsham. In addition, there are many half-timbered homes that still stand in the village that date back to medieval times.
While Aylsham is a market town with many amenities, its greatest attraction is its natural resources. The village was once known for its natural spa that was made from a chalybeate spring which was believed to help those with chronic conditions such as asthma. Aylsham is the end of the line for the Bure Valley Path, a nine-mile walking and cycling trail that is throughout Norfolk.
