Flower Delivery to West Bradenham with Clare Florist
West Bradenham is a small village in eastern England that makes up the Bradenham civil parish in Norfolk county, along with East Bradenham. It has a population of approximately 800 town folk in 320 households. The River Wissey starts in Bradenham and travels to the west, while the River Yare starts in East Bradenham and flows east. The region is rich with history, including at Bradenham Hall. Parishioners used to go to St. Mary’s Church, but it’s currently under conservation. Many famous people have lived in Bradenham, including writer Sir Henry Rider Haggard.
St. Mary’s church was an Anglican church, and is characterized by a large rectangular tower on its immediate right. It has a lead roof and a grey ashlar and brick exterior. It served the entire Bradenham region, including West. It’s currently under the protection of the National Heritage List for England, and is undergoing conservation by the Churches Conservation Trust. St. Mary’s was originally built in the 14th century. It was altered and built onto in the 15th and 19th centuries. It still contains an original organ from 1786. There are plans for the organ to also be restored.
Sir Henry Rider Haggard was born in Bradenham. He was of Danish descent and the 8th of ten children. His father, Sir William Maybohm Rider Haggard was a barrister who owned and lived at Bradenham Hall for many years. His mother was an author and poet. H. Rider Haggard was credited with writing the books, “King Solomon’s Mines”, and “Allan Quatermain Series”, both of which have been adapted for television and film. He died at the age of 68. His dog, named Spice, is buried at Bradenham Hall.
Bradenham Hall is a well-kept estate, with beautiful gardens, and an arboretum. It used to be known as “West Bradenham Hall” but its title has been shortened. It was built at about 1740, and was used as an army unit during WWII. The estate sits at the highest point in Bradenham, providing travellers with beautiful views of the neighbouring countryside. Including the gardens, the estate sits on twenty-seven acres.
The house is made in red brick Georgian and Queen Anne style. Only the grounds are open to the public during the spring and summer on designated dates, as the house is not available for tour. The Allhusen’s currently own the estate, and created their own vision for the garden, starting in 1953, rather than relying on landscape designers. The gardens are splendidly decorated with Yew hedges, herbaceous borders, and a rose garden. There are walkways where you can enjoy strolling along and viewing their wonderful collection of plants and flowers in West Bradenham.
