Flower Delivery Kirkleatham, North Yorkshire with Clare Florist
Located around three miles south of Redcar and near the mouth of the River Tees, Kirkleatham is considered as one of North Yorkshire's architectural gems. It's usually called a village by many, but some argue that it can be classified simply as an area that houses the beautiful Georgian-style buildings of the Turner Estate. Either way, it can't be denied that the area is an important part of Yorkshire's history and one of the best places to explore when visiting Redcar and Cleveland. With its beautiful Kirkleatham flowers, gorgeous historical buildings and interesting attractions, you'll surely have a fun and fantastic experience when you spend time in this village.
Kirkleatham: How It All Began
Sir William Turner (who was Lord Mayor of London the mid-1600s), grew up in Kirkleatham and used most of his fortune to build the Sir William Turner’s Hospital. His great-nephew and great-great-nephew also contributed to the development of the village, establishing the Free School, the Turner Mausoleum and the local library. One of his descendants became interested in breeding racehorses and was able to produce prize-winning steeds, paving the way to the founding of the Redcar Races.
As decades went by, the direct Turner family line died out and their estate fell into decline. Fortunately, in the 1970s, the Teesside Borough Council realised how valuable the estate's buildings and landscape were and declared it a Conservation Area. Over the years, local authorities strived to enhance the area while retaining its natural beauty. The Old Hall was saved from deterioration through numerous improvements, and what was left of the original woodland around estate was saved through environmental programmes. Just recently, the Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council attracted funding from the Governments Coastal Communities Fund to restore the walled gardens of the Kirkleatham Estate.
Must-See Attractions in Kirkleatham
Kirkleatham might not be the tourist hotspot that London and Manchester have become. However, it can provide lots of wonderful activities and attractions to visitors, particularly to those who want to escape the huge city crowds and enjoy the peace and quiet of a countryside village.
If you're planning to visit Kirkleatham, make sure to check out the Kirkleatham Museum. Previously known as the Free School built by Cholmley Turner, the museum houses rare archaeological finds from the only known Anglo-Saxon royal cemetery in the North East. You can also spend some time in the Redcar Racecoure, which has become famous for its unique atmosphere and action-packed horse racing events. It also has become popular for its annual Ladies' Day, during which women get decked out in their finery and enjoy a day full of champagne, chic outfits and pretty flowers in Kirkleatham.
Love animals? Make it a point to visit the Kirkleatham Owl and Endangered Species Centre, which can be found on the grounds of the Kirkleatham Old Hall. Here, you'll get to observe and interact with spectacled owls, great grey owls, great horned owls and white breasted barn owls. You'll also find ravens, kookaburras, hawks and vultures.
