Majority of Newton was given to the Hospital of St Leonard in the 12th century where it remained until the Dissolution of the Monasteries. From there, Newton became property of the Crown.
The Manor of Newton then became part of the estate of Sir John of Beningbrough (a Parliamentarian who signed the Death Warrant of King Charles I) in 1620. It remained part of the Beningbrough Hall Estate until 1916.

Newton Feast – first held in the 19th century during Whitsuntide week. Today, it takes place in June on a Saturday. In the past, people used to come to this feast through the River King which left York every night.
