Towton is a small village with a big past, nestled in the North Yorkshire district of Selby, although it is of huge historical significance very few people would recognise it as the site of one of the largest and most influential battles for the monarchy this country has ever seen.

Now home to pubs, flower shops and other amenities, the village looked very different in times past.

It was here on Palm Sunday the 29th of March 1461 that the Battle between the Yorkist Duke Edward and the Lancastrian King Henry the eighth took place, this was the deciding battle in the war of the roses. These wars had raged between the white rose of Yorkshire and the Red rose of Lancashire for the previous thirty years, many believing that it has been the largest and most brutal battle that has ever taken place in the country, with a reported death toll of 28,000. Edwards’s victory was in large due to his clever ability to use a situation to his advantage the head strong winds meant that the volley of arrows raining in from Lancastrian army fell short wasting precious resources, the ensuing hand to hand combat lasted for hours, the arrival of soldiers from Edwards ally the Duke of Norfolk boosted the numbers and the battle was won.

Present day Towton

The battlefield itself is now a lush and green flower covered land giving little away about its monumental past, a cross has been erected to remember the valiant soldiers from both sides that gave their lives. The village itself is now thriving surrounded by stunning Yorkshire moors, there are many walks around the moor where you can enjoy the large variety of wild flowers in Towton’s surrounding areas, if you are looking for markets Towton is only a few miles away from the large market towns of Tadcaster and Wetherby, here you can find anything from the finest local produce to beautiful flowers that would be ideal to take home to mum, these you could also have sent to Towton or any other village of your choice by using a florist.

Remembering the Past

The main event in the village is Palm Sunday this being the day of the battle itself, this is a memorial to those who died and flowers are laid to remember them, there are also re-enactments and tours throughout the day, there are also traders and battlefield society volunteers explaining how life would have been many years ago, including how flowers would have been put to a very different use.
