Situated between the rural market towns of Stokesley and Northallerton, West Rounton is a small, sleepy farming village located in North Yorkshire. Since 1929, it has been home to The Hurworth Hunt, one of the oldest hunts in the country.

HISTORY

In 1086, West Rounton was soke of Northallerton. By the end of the 11th century or the beginning of the 12th, the village was granted to Roger Conyers, who was an ancestor of the Conyers of Sockburn, by Bishop Ralph Flambard.

Conyers sold the village to Robert Colvill, who married his daughter Elizabeth Conyers. The land was in the possession of Colvill until it came into the possession of the Wandesford family of Kirklington in 1439-1440.

It is said that the Wandesford family sold West Rounton before 1500. Since there was no evidence found of a purchaser, it is believed that the manor was sold in small parcels.

Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, West Rounton was held in small portions until the Wailes family of East Rounton Grange acquired it in the early 19th century. Sir Lowthain Bell purchased the estate from them in 1903.

ATTRACTIONS

Church of St Oswald – this structure dates back to the 12th century. In 1860, it was completely rebuilt by architect James Pritchett. The church is listed as a Grade II building.

Horse Shoe Inn – a pub that has been around since the early 1800's. Although it shut down in 2005 after its owner Mrs Hoare had to go into a care home. Stan and Ann Taylor purchased the pub to provide a “traditional village local” after several other pubs closed down. Today, it serves a range of beers, ales, wines and spirits. The food is also prepared fresh and uses local produce, which is reflected in the changing menu each season.
