Hexham is a Northumberland market town, situated just south of the River Tyne. Newcastle-upon-Tyne lies 25 miles to the east of Hexham. The town has a long history, with a monastery having been founded here in the late 7th century. It played a key role in the Anglo-Scottish Wars in the Middle Ages and there was also a battle fought there during the 15th century Wars of the Roses.

Hexham Abbey still dominates the landscape of the town, while the Old Gaol, built in the 1330s, is England's oldest purpose built prison. Here, the history of the town and its major families, the Charltons and the Fenwicks, can be explored. Both families were known as Border Reivers, cattle rustlers along the Border in the 16th century, raiding into Scotland. Hadrian's Wall is not far away either, while visitors may also want to explore Kielder Water and Forest Park.
