It is both a village and civil parish located in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire. The Domesday Book lists the village as Baldretune and it's described as a dependent hamlet of Newark. The Bussney's were the lords of Balderton and lived in the area during the time of William the Conqueror and held the land until the reign of Elizabeth I. Balderton then passed to the Meers and Lascels and by the 1840s was owned largely by the Duke of Newcastle.

Parish Church of St Giles – built in the 12th century, the church features two Romanesque-style porch doorways the face north and south. Although built in the 12th century, the church was enlarged around the 13th and 14th centuries.
Balderton Lake – features a walkway around the lake as well as a wooded area and grasslands. A viewing area is also available for the disabled. Most of the trees around the area were planted in the early 1990s as part of a project of the John Hunt Infant School.
