Bircotes is a small mining town located in the Bassetlaw district, part of Nottinghamshire. It is located very close (on the border) with the borough of Doncaster. The closest town to Bircotes is Harworth and these two towns form the civil parish of Harworth and Bircotes. In addition to the city of Doncaster, Bircotes is also close to the largest town in this district – Worksop.
This area was always interesting for the population of central England because of the good soil which allowed agricultural activities. Bircotes. Nottinghamshire was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Although you won’t find this town as Bircotes in this book, it is clearly that the authors have described this parish where a large woodland area can be found. In addition, there was a Saxon Church dedicated All Saints which seems to be built on a mound. There is some evidence that the same church was rebuilt in the 12th century and in the period between 12th and 19th century, the population of this area was focused on farming and agriculture. In the beginning of the 18th century, the children in this area had the opportunity to learn in a school for the first time. The school was built in Harworth. What is also worth mentioning is that during this period Bircotes had its own feast day.
The 19th century was the period of economic growth of this region and the population was constantly growing. In the beginning of the 20th century, Bircotes became very important mining town because of the large deposits of coal found there. This is why most of the landscape there was changed.
Bircotes was officially founded in 1920s, but what is interesting is the fact that the town’s name has Saxon origins and means small dwelling.
