Flower Delivery to Newark-on-Trent with Clare Florist

Newark-on-Trent is a market town in Nottinghamshire, located in England's East Midlands. It's also known simply as Newark and is nicknamed as “The Key of the North”, referring to its strategic position that became highly important during the country's civil war. Newark is situated right on the River Trent, hence its name; it's located around 15 miles from London and has a population of around 26,000 people.

Newark-on-Trent: What Is Its History?

Archaeologists assume that the town has been around since the Roman times because it's located near the Fosse Way, one of the most important Roman roads. The area was granted to the Abbey of Peterborough in the 7th century and, later on, it was owned by the famous Lady Godiva and her husband the Earl of Mercia. They donated it to the monastery of Stow, which became under the leadership of a Norman Bishop after the Norman Conquest, but was subsequently passed on to the Bishops of Lincoln. During the Domesday survey, Newark already was a significant area as evidenced by the presence of burgesses.

During the Medieval times, the town became an important part of the wool and cloth industry and eventually achieved commercial prosperity. It played a huge role in the Civil War mainly because of its strategic location, and it went through several sieges until it surrendered to Charles I. After the war, Newark-on-Trend went through a series of developments that helped it grow and become more modernised. In the late 1700s, the Great North Road was raised on a series of arches to protect it from the floods that often ravaged the area. A few years later, a brick bridge and the town hall were constructed (both are still around today). Other buildings in the town were constructed in the Victorian era.
