Flower Delivery to Stapleford, Nottinghamshire
Stapleford is a town located in the county of Nottinghamshire, right on the border with Derbyshire, on the eastern portion of England. Stapleford is located nine kilometres west of Nottingham. Other towns nearby are Ilkeston, Beeston, Toton, and Sandiacre. The town is near the River Erewash. The town became a parish in 1987, when started its town council. The town is often nicknamed “Stabbo”, a play on its name. The town has a church, several schools, and a full mash microbrewery.
The Roach is the intersection of several roads in town, including Church Street, Derby Road, Nottingham Road, and Toton Lane. This name dates back to Napoleonic times when prisoners were required to cut through the rock to build roads in the terrain. They called it “La Roche” or the Roach in English.
The name Stapleford most likely came from a medieval meaning. The word staple used to refer to the system of trade and taxation. Overseas trade could only be done in specific designated towns, hence a staple port. John Weever, an antiquary and poet, had defined the meaning of a staple town, meaning it was by the prince’s authority, and for when foreign merchandise was to be traded in town.
It’s close to the East Midlands airport, which is about sixteen kilometres away. The A52 takes commuters to Nottingham and Derby. There are several bus routes, and the Beeston railway station is the nearest. There are plans to extend the light railway line into town.
The origins of the town can be traced back to Norman times, in the 11th century. St. Helens is the town church. In its churchyard is an old stone cross that dates back to Saxon times, 6th to 11th centuries. It has the distinction of being the oldest Christian monument in the Midlands region of England.
In the past, the town thrived through trade, due to its close proximity to the River Trent, and the River Erewash. The town was the central point for trade in this region.
In the late 18th century, stocking hose factories were an important part of the commerce of Stableford. This trade thrived in town, and in the Midlands region. There are still stocking house knitters’ buildings standing beside more modern buildings in the town, particularly along Nottingham Road.
The Hemlock stone is a monolith-style natural rock formation made from red sandstone, that is protected by a fence. It dates back 200 million years, formed during the Triassic Period. There have been many theories as to why it survived the surrounding land features. It’s possible that local town folk left a portion standing, after fully quarrying the surrounding landscape for sandstone.
