Flower Delivery to Goosey with Clare Florist
Goosey is a small village in Oxfordshire. It is composed of a few houses, farms, and cottages. Approximately 135 people live there. The village is located in the Vale of White Horse. The Vale is fairly flat, with plenty of wooded area. It also has the peaks of the Berkshire Downs, which make for a nice landscape, especially in contrast to the greenery of all of those trees. The name “Goosey” comes from the fact that the part of the Vale where Goosey is used to be a marsh, with a very small portion of land poking above the wetlands. The “-ey” at the end of the word means island. The goose part, fairly evidently, is from the fact that Benedictine monks used to keep geese there. Hence, the name Goosey means “goose island.” The monks prime occupation was providing dairy products to the Abbot, as the area around the village is prime grazing area for cows.
One of the most interesting sites in Goosey is their charming Church of All saints. The nave of the church was constructed in the early 13th century. The chancel was added during the reign of the Tudors in the 16th century. It is really an undiscovered gem of Oxfordshire, as it contains hints to various times in English history. Different parts of the church were added or adjusted throughout the centuries. It began as the chapel for the aforementioned monks, who tended their geese nearby. The monks ended up in the village as far back as 785 AD. This happened because the ruler at the time coveted a different island owned by the Abbot. He proposed the Abbot exchange his nice island for a small piece of marshy land, which the Abbot agreed to, if only because he wanted to keep his head. It turned out that it was not such a bad exchange, as the marshy bit of land attracted many geese, and had plenty of land for cattle to graze on. As soon as they arrived, the monks built a small chapel, but none of it remains today. Despite being quite small, the chapel contains some fascinating artifacts, notably the medieval windows that are still intact. Though the church may be small, it is an excellent example of life in small-town England. It is an example of life today, but also is indicative of how inhabitants of Goosey lived hundreds or even thousands of years ago.
