Flower Delivery to Nettlebed with Clare Florist

Nettlebed is a small village of 727 residents, located in South Oxfordshire, in southeastern England. It’s also considered a civil parish, and is within the Chiltern Hills. The closest villages are Wallinford, about ten kilometres away, and Henley-on-Thames, seven kilometres away.

Large pudding stones are found in this region, which is a rock conglomeration of several different coloured pebbles all joined together. There have been settlements in Nettlebed since Palaeolithic times. Nettlebed was also a popular route during ancient times. There was a pass through the Chiltern Hills that led between Oxford and Henley. In 1736, a turnpike was created between Henley and Wallinford. It was a turnpike until 1873. Today this road is now called the A4130.

The village church is St. Bartholomew’s Church of England parish church. It began as a chapel for the parish of Benson, which is right beside Nettlebed. One record found notes that the Empress Matilda gave the benefice of Benson, chapels of Nettlebed, and chapels of Warborough to the Augustinian Abbey in 1140. This Abbey was located at Dorchester.

Starting in the 14th century, brick making was an important industry for Nettlebed. This continued until the 1930s. Nettlebed has a historic pottery kiln, which is a structure with a pointed roof with vent at top. None of the other pottery kilns remain today.

Nettlebed was also popular for its sand, which was used to make flint glass. George Ravenscroft was the first person to discover its properties in 1674.

The old medieval church was removed in 1845, and replaced with the current building of St. Bartholomew’s Church. The Hakewill family of architects were responsible for the design. This building has a bell tower with six bells. These bells were made by Charles and George Mears from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1846.

Crocker End House started as a rectory in 1870. Its ownership passed to Lord Campbell of Eskan, and then to the Earl of Arran. In 1989 it was purchased by the Duke and Duchess of Kent. They moved into the house from Anmer Hall, where they had been living in Norfolk for eighteen years. This estate has over two acres of garden lands. The family has since sold Crocker End House and moved away.

Nettlebed also had the only smock mill that was located in Oxfordshire. This windmill had been moved to here from Chinnor. It burned down in 1912.

Nettlebed has a music festival every July, which features local bands. There is also a Musical Fireworks Festival in October with food and drink stalls, raffles, a fancy dress competition, a children’s carousel, and fireworks every night.
