Flower Delivery to South Leigh – A Village and Civil Parish on Limb Brook
South Leigh is located on Limb Brook, a small tributary of the River Thames. The village is about 2 ½ miles east of Witney in Oxfordshire.
In A History of the County of Oxford: Volume 12, Wootton Hundred (South) Including Woodstock, South Leigh is described as “formerly a chapelry of Stanton Harcourt.” Although the village doesn't make an appearance in the Domesday Book, its first mention came in the late 12th century and by that time, it already had its own church.
The manor house in South Leigh was built in the 16th century (now called Church Farm House). The house was acquired by William Gore in the middle of the 17th century and the Gore family established South Leigh as a separate parish within Stanton Harcourt. This decision was not met with enthusiasm and led to a series of disputes.
South Leigh is home to a couple of listed buildings, and that includes the parish church, St James' the Great. The church began as a chapel of the Stanton Harcourt parish and remained in that capacity until 1868. Although the church was extensively altered during the 15th century, there are still elements that date back to the 12th century.
South Leigh is about eight miles west of Oxford and 2 ½ miles east of Witney. With those places having quite a few interesting spots themselves, why not fancy a visit? Here are some of the attractions worth seeing:
Witney & District Museum – features an exhibition showcasing the history of Whitney and the surrounding area. Items from local industries such as local brewing, blanket and engineering industries are displayed. All of these are placed on the ground floor gallery while the upstairs gallery is used for temporary exhibitions.
Blenheim Palace – situated in a park created by Capability Brown, this palace is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and was presented to John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough as recognition for his victory over French and Bavarian troops in 1704. An 18th-century Baroque structure, the palace is where Sir Winston Churchill was born.
Oxfordshire Museum – located in Woodstock, this museum features galleries with changing exhibits, as well as galleries with interactive exhibits. The museum also hosts various programmes of events and activities for children and adults alike.
