Weavers from Paisley began producing woollen shawls with exotic patterns from 1800 to 1850. Although originally from Kashmir, unique additions to hand looms and Jacquard looms allowed Paisley weavers to work with five colours instead of just two. Thus was born the paisley pattern that has persisted to this day despite the shawl going out of fashion in the 1870s.

History

Paisley has monastic origins, evidenced by the many religious sites around town, including the medieval Abbey, the Cathedral Church of Saint Mirin, and the Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church.
Although there is not much concrete information, Paisley is believed to be a major religious centre of the Kingdom of Strathclyde, along with Glasgow and Govan.

The Industrial Revolution allowed the textile industry in Paisley to flourish. The success of making textiles turned the small market town to an important industrial town in the late 18th century.

Religious Sites

A number of religious sites dot the town of Paisley. One of the most noticeable is the 12th-century medieval Abbey located in the town’s centre.

Another structure, the Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church, which dominates the town’s skyline, is a Gothic Revival structure named for industrialist Thomas Coats and contains a 3020 pipe Hill Organ.

Over on Incle Street is St Mirin’s Cathedral is a neo-Romanesque structure dedicated to Saint Mirin, the patron saint of Paisley. The current structure was completed in 1931 and replaced an older 19th-century church that was the first Catholic Church in Scotland since the Reformation.

St Matthew’s Church, an Art Nouveau building was designed by a local architect and stands at the junction of Gordon Street and Johnston Street.

History & Culture

The textile industry made Paisely a successful and important industrial town in the 18th century. A look back at that period of the town’s history can be seen at the Paisley Thread Mill Museum.
Another landmark with a textile connection is the Dooslan Stane (now in Brodie Park), a meeting place of the Weavers Union in the South of Paisley.
