Flower Delivery to Blair Atholl by Clare Florist

Blair Atholl in Perthshire, Scotland is a small town that has been included in the Cairngorms National Park on 13 March 2008, upon the request of the people. As a place that combines the charm of a village and the vibrancy of a tourist centre, there’s no doubt that this place is a must-visit. Located at the junction of the rivers Tilt and Garry, expect to find some of the most breathtaking views you’ll ever see. Just imagine — long stretch of green, decorated with beautiful flowers in Blair Atholl and with the mountains in the background.

There’s also Glen Tilt that’s not only famous for its marbles in shades of green and light grey, but also its spectacular scenery. At first, there’s only a heavily wooded area that can be seen that later unfolds a dramatic sight of a natural landscape that showcases the beauty of Blair Atholl flowers and other wonders of nature.

But what makes this town really interesting is that its history also tells the story of the Atholl family. Put two and two together, and it’s easy to assume that the place was named after the family. The fact, however, is that Blair is a Gaelic name that means field or plain, and Atholl refers to the surrounding district.

What really happened back then?

It was in 1457 that the Earldom of Atholl was given to Sir John Stewart of Balvenie. But having no sons to succeed down the line, the earldom was bestowed to the husband of the then heiress, daughter of John 5th Earl of Atholl. So, by 1629, the Earl of Tulliebardine, John Murray gained ownership.

The Blair Castle, the traditional home of the earls, was occupied by the Marquis of Montrose 15 years later, and then in 1689 was garrisoned by Claverhouse, which fell at the Battle of Killiecrankie.

Despite what seems to be a constant tug of war, the history of Blair Atholl also left some really interesting local attractions.

Blair Castle

As home of the earls and the site of many battles, Blair Castle is the town’s most famous tourist attraction. Of course, with a reputation as one of the premier stately homes in Scotland and the last castle in the British Isle to be besieged during the Jacobite Rebellion, it definitely deserves to take the top spot in the list of sights to see when visiting Blair Atholl.

Now known as the Atholl House, it houses some of the finest collections of Highland artefacts, historical relics, hunting trophies, weapons, paintings, embroidery, china and furniture. The same thing is true with the plaster work of the castle, and the decor of some of the main rooms.

Two of the most notable features of the castle are Diana’s Grove and Hercules Garden. Because the Dukes of Atholl were enthusiasts of tree planting, Diana’s Grove has some of the tallest trees in Great Britain, while the Hercules Garden has plantations of fruit trees surrounding it. Of course, you’ll also find other follies, including a huge variety of Blair Atholl flowers.

Jamborette

The Blair Atholl Patrol Jamborette is a Scout Camp that is held every two years in the extensive grounds of Blair Castle. It has an attendance of around 1200, with participants hailing from all over the world, particularly half-Scottish and half-international scouts. John Kennedy was the camp chief for 12 years until he retired in 2010. The 2012 Jamborette was then led by Andrew Sharkey.
