Just like most towns in Mid Wales, Builth Wells started out as a small village that surrounded a Normand castle way back in the 12th century. Because it is located at the crossing of the River Wye, the town did have quite a turbulent history. However, had it not been for its strategic location, it also would have not grown into the prosperous market town that it is now known.

Builth Wells first came to limelight in 1282 when the last independent Prince of Wales, Llewelyn, was killed near the town during the Irfon Bridge battle. His remains are buried at the Abbey Cwm Hir. Much later, the town once again played an iconic part in the Welsh history when it was mentioned that the Mabinogion, the compendium of Welsh mythology, was set in writing here. Further along in the 19th century, despite frequent destructive fires, the empire grew and railways came about. It was at this point that the town started flourishing in terms of tourism and it eventually came to be known as a Spa town.

Attractions and Landmarks

The Llywelyn Mural

Right at the centre of Builth Wells can be found a 1000-feet mural that depicts the last days of Prince Llywelyn. The mural, designed and painted by Ronald Swanwick with the help of Neil Chambers, shows the historical scene of Llywelyn and his men fighting. It also serves as a representation of the Builth Castle.

The Gilfach Longhouse and Nature Reserve

The Gilfach Longhouse is a restored Welsh structure located in the middle of a 418-acre nature reserve. It has since been designated as a visitor’s centre where people can relax and enjoy the scenic views of nature and Builth Wells flowers. Surrounding the centre is a vast stretch of meadows, upland moorland, river and sessile oak woodland. It is the perfect place to get the opportunity to discover more of Builth Wells’ rich nature.

Erwood Station Craft Centre and Gallery

Since its establishment in 1985, the Erwood Station Craft Centre has been an important community dedicated to supporting Welsh artists and craft makers with their passion. The centre holds demonstrations, exhibits and even mini concerts over summer holidays. Every 6 to 8 weeks, it organises exhibitions for photographers, painters, sculptors, potters and weavers.

Nestled by the glorious river of Wye, Builth Wells offers a very peculiar shopping experience. Believe it or not, there are no shopping malls or arcades here – the entire town IS the shopping centre! Retailer outlets jostle from side to side through the streets from fashion outlets, butchers, jewellers, gift shops, small grocery stores, bakeries, ironmongers and even news agencies. There are also florists in the district that offer the most beautiful of flowers in Builth Wells.
