Llansilin is a village located about six miles west of Oswestry in Powys, Wales.  This community includes the village, a large rural area and a few surrounding hamlets.  The beautiful village can be seen without even visiting—it was the primary location during the making of the film The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill but Came Down a Mountain, which starred Hugh Grant.  The Gyrn, a long hill that overlooks the village was used to film all the hilltop scenes.  It was also featured on an episode of The Cadfael Chronicles.

For those coming to Llansilin to connect with its history—you’re in luck.  The beautiful church in Llansilin is dedicated to Saint Silin, though today is better known as Saint Sulien.  The oldest part of the present building goes all the way back to the 13th century.  While there was a church on the site from much earlier times, it did not survive until the present day.  A majority of the remaining present building dates back to the early 15th century.  Unfortunately, the original wooden spire was destroyed in a fire, and the current tower was built in 1832.  Major restoration happened in 1889 and 1890, resulting in the church reopening in June of 1890, where it remains open today.  

Though small, Llansilin sports a few famous individuals worth noting.  For example, the Welsh poet Huw Morus’s grave can be found in the churchyard, alongside two British soldiers from World War I.  Other famous individuals include Owain Glyndwr, who was the last native Welshman to hold the title of Prince of Wales, and the German Neoclassical metal guitarist Uli Jon Roth.
