One of the more notable manors in the region is Llancaiach Fawr Manor. This manor was built in Tudor style, and is just north of the Llancaiach Colliery. It’s one of the finest examples of a fortified manor still standing today. There is a single entrance, and the stairwell walls were built four feet thick which split the manor into two, allowing a safe place of refuge during attack.
The village was the terminus of the world’s first steam railway journey in 1804.
