Flower Delivery to Neepsend with Clare Florist
The city of Sheffield grew mostly out of industrialisation, and this is evident in the suburb of Neepsend. The area is located about a mile north-east of the city centre. A large portion of Neepsend covers the River Don’s flood plain and in 2007, the suburb was flooded due to the bursting of the river’s banks. Neepsend recovered from the disaster and built defences to prevent similar events from happening again.
The Gazetteer of the British Isles by John Bartholomew, which was published in 1887, described Neepsend as an ecclesiastical district of Sheffield. Although there isn’t much information about ancient settlements in the area, Scandinavian presence was recorded by the 10th century. Being a heavily forested land, they cleared the woodland and transformed the valley floor near the River Don into meadows and fields.
Industrialisation arrived in the 18th century through the construction of the Sandbed Wheel on the River Don, close to Hillfoot Bridge. A tannery opened in the 19th century followed by a gas works. The arrival of industry saw Neepsend’s population expand which resulted in a lot of changes.
Neepsend’s character is industrial in nature. This and areas like Kelham have contributed to the character of Sheffield, especially in terms of architecture and commerce. Visiting the area, one could see the influence of the cutlery, silverware and steel industries.
Neepsend Gas Works. A dominant structure in the district, the gas holder also serves as a popular landmark. It was built in 1852 by the Gas Consumers Company.
New Testament Church of God. Located on Nursery Street, this Grade II listed building features details such as thin-pointed buttresses, a crenellated parapet, and a square tower – features present in the Christ Church in Attercliffe, a structure that Anne and Elizabeth Harrison wanted this church to be a copy of.
Aizlewood’s Mill. This is another Grade II listed building that once operated as a six-storey flour mill. It was built in 1861 and became derelict over the years. It was restored and since 1990, has been functioning as a business centre.
Yellow Arch Studios. A recording studio that was converted from Victorian factory workshops. A number of recording artists have practiced or rehearsed here including the Arctic Monkeys, Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley – just to name a few.
If you’re interested in industrial structures, Neepsend is one place where you’ll find a number of them. After viewing some buildings, you can treat your date to a romantic meal then present them with Neepsend flowers.
