Flower Delivery to Shrewsbury with Clare Florist

Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, England, and it’s only 9 miles from the Welsh border. You’ll find it on the River Severn and it’s one of the finest medieval market towns in all of England. There aver 600 listed buildings in town for you to visit and learn a little bit about the history of this place; among them you’ll find Shrewsbury Castle, which is a wonderful red sandstone fortification founded in 1074 by Norman Earl of Shrewsbury; and there’s also the Shrewsbury Abbey, which is a former Benedictine monastery founded in 1083 by Roger de Montgomery. In the summer, you’ll find yourself surrounded by flowers and blooms all around; this has earned it the name of “Town of Flowers”.

This town’s history dates back to the Early Middle Ages as it was founded circa 800 AD. In the Late Middle Ages it reached the height of commercial relevance; this was thanks to the wool trade, which was a major industry at the time, and to the fact that the River Severn and the Watling Street served as main trading routes. In 1403 the Battle of Shrewsbury took place and it was fought between King Henry IV and Henry Hotspur Percy, with the King emerging victorious. This event was celebrated by William Shakespeare in his Henry IV, Part 1, Act 5. Shrewsbury is the birthplace and childhood home of naturalist Charles Darwin and it’s also home to the Ditherington Flax Mill which is the world's first iron-framed building; also known as "the grandfather of the skyscraper". The history aficionado will find a read about this place quite interesting, and a visit even more so.

Being the birthplace of Charles Darwin, Shrewsbury’s horticulture continues to be popular to this very day. This is great news for us flora lovers! In fact, the Shrewsbury Flower Show, which is held every year, is one of the largest horticultural events in England; this year it’s scheduled for August 11th and 12th, if you’re interested in stopping by! This show is featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-running flower show in the world because it has been running for more than 125 years; it attracts about 100,000 visitors each year and it’s organized by the Shropshire Horticultural Society.
The flower show is organized in a large number of marquees over the 29-acre land area of The Quarry; The Quarry Marquee is the main marquee and it hosts the best horticulturalists in the country, the Severn Marquee hosts amateur growers and also Bees, Honey and Wine exhibitors, and the Dingle Marquee is home to the popular Floral Art Exhibitors. You’ll be amazed by the competitions amongst the flower growers and their incredible displays. Other features of the flower show include: flowers, fruit and vegetables displays; sale of arts and crafts, military bands, show jumping, music and entertainment and a large firework display to close both evenings of the show. You and your loved ones will also enjoy the show gardens and the floral train!

There’s not a dull moment in Shrewsbury, other main events to keep you busy on spring and summer are: the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, the Cartoon Festival, the Shrewsbury Bookfest, the Shrewsbury Regatta, the Cycle Grand Prix, the Shrewsbury Carnival, the Food Festival, the Dragon Boat Race and the Coracle World Championships, to mention a few. It’s such a lively town; you won’t want to miss it!
