Newton or Newtown is still being used as a name for the southeastern part of the present day town. The northeastern part, on the other hand, is called Newington or New Inn – which was another small village that existed prior to the town.
The town's name is taken from the Craven Arms Hotel, which is located on the junction of the A49 and B4368 roads, which is named after the Lords Craven, who owned the Stokesay Castle.
Craven Arms was formed from the merging of two older parishes: Stokesay and Halford.
