Edgmond is a small village in the ceremonial county of Shropshire in England. It is also part of the borough of Telford and Wrekin. The town of Newport is located only one mile south of Edgmond and that’s why it is not surprise that most of the people who live in Edgmond work or travel to Newport on a daily basis.
In 1980, a group of archeologists discovered a bronze axe in Edgmond. The axe was believed to be more than 4000 years old. This means that there was human presence in this area at least from 2000 BC. In addition, they have found an Iron Age close to the village borders. What is even more interesting is the fact that there is evidence about the continuity of the life in this village. There are findings that this village was considered wealthy and big in the period when the Romans ruled this land.
When it comes to the name of this settlement there are actually two theories. The first one says that the origin is from the Anglo-Saxon language and it actually means edge of marsh. Although there are people who claim that the name comes as a result of a local place called Ecmond’s Hill in honor of a local Dane called Eigmond. Another thing that is interesting about this place is that Edgmond holds the record for the lowest temperature in England – 26.1 C or -15 F.
Famous people who lived here include Charlotte Sophia Burne (a well-known folklorist) and Ozzy Osbourne who lived there for a brief period of time.
You can reach Edgmond from London by driving on M40. Edgmond is located about 160 miles north of London. There is a also a bus from Newport and Shrewsbury.
St. Peter’s Church
