Great Bolas, also sometimes called Bolas Magna, is a village in the North West of Shropshire, near Newport. It can be found where the rivers Tern and Meese meet, near a small hamlet which is called Little Bolas by locals. This village has been on the map since the early 1200s. The name likely means “a place beside the river that is easily flooded,” though some believe that the name is actually related to old words for the bend in a river or a large house.

While Great Bolas did likely exist at the time the Domesday Book was created, it was a part of the Isombridge estate, and therefore was not listed separately. Great Bolas was, however, where the noble families lived in the area. This was also where the court was held, as well as any executions ordered by that court.

In the late 1800s, the village had built a school, a graveyard, a rectory, and even a mill. Over time, wells were built and the village became a small manufacturing hub for the surrounding area. With only about three hundred inhabitants, it is a small, but vibrant village, with lots of beautiful green space and a wide variety of activities for its locals and visitors alike.
