West Bagborough's name is said to be derived from “Begas Barrow” which means Badger's Hill. Some say the origin of the name is an amalgamation of the family name “Baga” and “beorg” which is the Old English word for hill. Whichever is the case, the Domesday Book lists the village as Bageberge.
Remnants from ancient times were also found in the area. Several bowl barrows and cairns dating to the Bronze Age were found around Wills Neck and the Triscombe Stone. A 4th-century Roman silver was discovered in the village in October 2001.
There are a couple of nice attractions in West Bagborough, and these include:
Bagborough House – built around 1730 and is now a Grade II* listed building. Erected next to St Pancras Church, the house was built by the Popham family. The house's south front features five Ionic columns and overlooks a landscaped park. The house is currently lived in by Diana and Philip Brooke-Popham and it can be used as a wedding venue.
Saint Pancras Church – dates back to the 15th century and is now a Grade II* listed building. It is said to sit high above the main village because of the Black Death which reduced the population to a hundred people in the 14th century. When the plague hit, residents opted to move away and re-build far away from the church.
