Troon is a town in southern Ayrshire, in Scotland. It is located on the coast and the Isle of Arran is visible from the town, across the Firth of Clyde. Its location on the coast makes it an important port town, serving as a base for various freight and ferry services, including an express ferry to Larne, as well as being home to a yacht marina. The town is also known for the Royal Troon Golf Course which plays host to the Open Golf Championship approximately once every seven years, as it is one of several venues used to host the tournament.

Troon has a rich and fascinating history, based primarily on the booming industry generated by the port facilities in the town. The name has highly disputed roots but the general consensus seems to be that it means 'nose' referring to its protruding position into the sea. Troon was also the terminus for a horse-drawn railway that brought coal from mines in the region around Kilmarnock and later became a key centre for shipbuilding - an industry which disappeared as recently as 2000.
